Do first impressions count?

speed networking 150212 150x150 Do first impressions count?‘Don’t judge a book by its cover’ is a phrase which teaches us that we shouldn’t judge the worth or value of something by its outward appearance alone. Unfortunately, first impressions can often count in the business world and I was never more aware of this than when I booked up to attend a speed networking event at a local business show.

Along with 19 other people I would get one minute to tell the person sat opposite me who I was and what I did, and then they would do the same. And this exercise would be repeated with everybody in the room. Read the rest of this entry »

Freedom of speech

no free speech 090212 150x150 Freedom of speechYep – I’m all for it.  I firmly believe we should all have the right to say what we want without fear of recrimination.  True, there is usually a right time, a right way and a right place to say certain things but no one should have their opinions curtailed.

Under certain regimes I also firmly respect the need for people with strong opinions that oppose the status quo to remain anonymous – the number of outspoken dissenters who have gone to prison or even died for their beliefs is frightening.

However, in a business environment justifying anonymity is rather harder and an example I received via email last night has really angered me.  I firmly believe that successful communications is best achieved as part of a two way dialogue, with all parties involved able to express their opinions freely and any negative feedback to be dealt with in a professional and open manner.  I also think both negative and positive comments need to be thoroughly justified.
