Barbican celebrates 30th anniversary with bumper year for corporate events.
Barbican records second best year for corporate business as the combined arts and meetings venue celebrates its 30th anniversary.
In March 1982, the Barbican opened its doors to the public for the first time. And as the iconic venue commemorates its 30th anniversary, the Barbican is also celebrating its second best year for corporate business.
Anthony Hyde, general manager of Barbican Business Events, comments: “Meetings, conferences and corporate hospitality are an important part of the Barbican’s overall offering. And despite the economy stuttering and budgets being squeezed, the financial year for 2011-2012 was our second best on record. It’s recognition of the unique setting and high quality service we provide to clients. As the Barbican marks its 30th anniversary we look forward to the introduction of exciting initiatives and the completion of new spaces which will make the Centre even more attractive for meetings and conferences in the years to come.”
Barbican chosen as venue for prestigious children’s book awards
The 2012 Carnegie Book Awards will take place at the Barbican as the awards celebrates 75th anniversary.
The 2012 CILIP Carnegie Book Awards will be held at Europe’s largest combined arts and conference venue.
The distinguished awards are a presentation of two medals – the Carnegie Medal – the UK’s most influential children’s book award – and the Kate Greenaway Medal which is awarded for outstanding illustration in a book for children and young people. Both medals are awarded annually by the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP). The awards prestige is rooted in the unique judging process which pools the professional expertise of librarians from across the country.
Barbican staff don running shoes for charity
Team run Virgin London Marathon in aid of Lord Mayor’s Appeal.
Seven Barbican employees donned their running shoes in aid of charity at the weekend. The runners participated in the Virgin London Marathon as a part of the City of London team, alongside 18 colleagues, to raise money for a number of charitable causes.
Lee Dobson, Nick Haslam and George Sampson were all running in the 26.2 mile course for the third time. Both Lee and Nick produced personal bests (3:32.11 and 3:58.13 respectively) while George completed in 5:19.15. Running the marathon for the first time were; Emma Barrow (5:07.54), Sarah Wall (5:47.45), Pip Swindall (6:27.05) and Ben Yates (6:27.05).

Barbican announces corporate packages for Designing 007 – 50 years of Bond Style
The Barbican has announced details of the first corporate packages for Designing 007 – a celebration of 50 years of Bond style.
With unprecedented access to EON’s archive, Designing 007 is a multi-sensory experience which will transform the Barbican spaces and take the audience on a journey through 50 years of Bond style – from 1962’S Dr No to this year’s Skyfall – to celebrate the work of 007 in design, music, graphics, cars, fashion, production, gadgets and cinematography.
Royal Television Society returns to the Barbican
The Royal Television Society is returning to the Barbican. During 2012 the organisation will use Europe’s largest combined conference and arts venue for a variety of events.
The RTS last used the Barbican for corporate events in September 2011. The decision to come back to the central London venue was made due to the variety of spaces it provides, the expertise provided by the team in facilitating successful events and the launch of its new corporate offering. The Barbican’s latest initiative – Barbican Business Events – will bring together the venue’s rich heritage and history in the performing arts and their professional expertise within the corporate events sector.
Barbican event clients to be offered presentation training and rehearsal time
As part of a growing number of additional services, the Barbican is offering speaker training and rehearsal time to event organisers. The sessions include the expertise of a voice and presentation coach from the Barbican’s in house team as well as time in the actual meeting room booked for their event.
The new service will provide speakers and presenters with a chance to visit the Barbican in advance of their event, learn more about the space in which they will be speaking and actually practice their presentation in front of an expert, who will be able to advise them on delivery style and technique.

This summer the Barbican marks the 50th anniversary of the James Bond film franchise, from 1962’s DR NO to this year’s SKYFALL, by joining forces with EON Productions to create an unique exhibition designed by Ab Rogers, curated by the Barbican and guest-curated by fashion historian Bronwyn Cosgrave and Oscar®-winning costume designer Lindy Hemming. The exhibition is supported by Swarovski.
With unprecedented access to EON’s archive, Designing 007 – Fifty Years of Bond Style is a multi-sensory experience where screen icons, costumes, production design, automobiles, gadgets, special effects, graphic design, exotic locations, weapons, stunts and props combine to immerse the audience in the creation and development of Bond style over its auspicious 50 year history.
Barbican returns to International Confex
The Barbican is returning to International Confex this year as a full exhibitor after several years stand sharing with London and Partners.
Barbican general manger Anthony Hyde comments: “Following the decision to move to ExCel and reinvigorate International Confex, we decided it was time to rethink our approach to the show, demonstrating our support by taking a full sized stand.”
Whilst at the show, the Barbican will be further highlighting their Business Events offering – a refinement to their corporate sales activity – which offers organisers the chance to integrate elements of the Barbican’s artistic offering with corporate events.
Barbican launches “Barbican Business Events”
New initiative also brings changes to the Barbican team, with promotions for Anthony Hyde and Samme Allen.
Following substantial research, planning and client feedback, the Barbican has re-organised its commercial events departments. The newly created team, titled Barbican Business Events, will be headed up by Anthony Hyde, who takes on the role of General Manager. In addition to the Barbican’s well known venues, Anthony’s role will also encompass the introduction of several new venues including a new 608 seat capacity space. Read the rest of this entry »
Soaring Worldwide appoints new reputation manager
Swindon based communications and PR agency Soaring Worldwide has welcomed Sarah Carless to its team as a reputation manager.
Soaring Worldwide has doubled in size year-on-year since its foundation in 2006, and Sarah will be a part of the company’s strategic growth plans.
Commenting on Sarah’s appointment Adam Baggs, managing director of Soaring Worldwide, says: “We are confident that Sarah’s background and experience will enable her to make a valuable contribution to the growth of the company.
